The umbilical cord blood is important because the blood contains what are known as stem cells. In the developed body a cell is one and only one type of cell. A brain cell is only a brain cell. A liver cell is only a liver cell. However, a stem cell is unique because it hasn’t been programmed to become anything specific.
The stem cells collected from the umbilical cord blood can be used in very complex medical procedures to develop into the type of cells needed. A stem cell can become a brain cell or a liver cell or virtually any other type of cell.
